The kids are out of school for the summer, which means that we have an extra excuse to get out of town and enjoy fun day trips. If you are looking for a place to go this Father’s Day, or really, anytime year around, I’d suggest the Hill Country Science Mill, a hands-on museum in downtown Johnson City which is fun for kids of all ages.
Housed in an historic building which was a feed mill first used in the late 1800s, the Science Mill offers state-of-the-art exhibits designed to show guests how science is present in our everyday lives. A few of our favorite exhibits include:
The Story of Water, an exploration of the movement of underground water through an aquifer, which takes place inside a 40-foot-tall silo.
Mindball, a competition of mind of matter (literally) which pits your brainwaves against your opponents.
Create An Explosion, because there’s nothing like the anticipation of a loud bang to turn heads!
Wind Turbine Test Bed, where you get the chance to see how the shape of turbine blades impacts power production.
Race Track, which allows you to become a (car) master builder and see the building techniques which help propel your car the fastest.
Here are some other things you should know before you go:
The Science Mill hosts events which are included with the price of admission:
- On the Friday before Father’s Day, and every third Friday of the month, grandparents get 50% off the price of their admission when visiting with grandchildren.
- On Saturday, June 18, 2016, world-renowned artists McKay Otto will facilitate a special class, Trash to Treasure, to create mind-blowing art out of recyclable materials.
- Every Wednesday, all summer, dress as your favorite Mario character to play in a deconstructed video game. Dress as your favorite Mario character to receive a $5 off coupon to the Science Store.
The Science Mill has an area especially designed for Young Explorers (toddlers and preschoolers). There are also outdoor exhibits.
Although there are many restaurants in and around Johnson City, the Lady Bird Lane Cafe offers an impressive menu of sandwiches, flat breads, soups, salads and snacks, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
