Without our car, my family and I, would not be able to get anywhere! Living in Texas, which we all know is a great big open state with LONG stretches of open road, having a well maintained car is critical especially in this Texas heat! And just like any Dad, I take pride in working on my own vehicle and hope to teach my son some tips and tricks along the way. Here are my 5 Car Care Tips!
1. Change the Oil Regularly.
The first thing my Grandfather taught me, when I was old enough, was how to change the oil on a vehicle. He told me not only is changing the oil on your vehicle necessary, it is extremely easy to do! With Quaker State, Advanced Durability Motor Oil, Ultimate Durability, and Defy – High Mileage Motor Oil, you can keep your new car or old reliable in tip top shape! I personally use a high mileage oil like Quaker States Defy, because my daily drive has well over 133k miles on the odometer! I usually buy all my supplies at my local Wal-Mart which carries all Quaker State Oil products. On our new car that we own, I like to use synthetic oil because it lasts longer and saves you money.
2. Top off fluid levels.
Along with changing your oil, make sure you top off or refill any other fluids that may need attention. I usually check the power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid and the one that most of us forget, I check the windshield wiper fluids. Before any long trip with my family, I pop the hood and make sure all the levels are topped off before heading out! I take great pride knowing that my family will be safe and sound driving, because I checked my fluids and made sure everything was good to go!
3. Wash and Wax.
Keep your car looking clean! A simple wash and wax will not only give you bonding time with your kids (my kids love washing our car, mainly because they get all wet and play) but it keeps your car looking good and helps preserve the paint! After not washing our truck for a few weeks, my son usually will come up and ask, “Do we need to wash the truck Dad? It looks pretty dirty!” It’s the little things we take pride in like keeping our truck looking good and running good that makes me feel good about what I am teaching my sons as they get older!
4. Check the tire pressure.
Well inflated tires will not only keep you and your family safe, it will help you get more miles per gallon. Saving money at the pump is always a good thing! Checking your tire pressure and how the tires thread is wearing is extremely important in this Texas heat, too. Before every road trip we make sure the tires are well inflated and if necessary check to see if we need a tire rotation. My personal motto is “Better safe than Sorry!” I don’t want to be driving down the highway and have to fix a flat tire on the shoulder of a major highway.
5. Make Sure all Lights are Working.
Before any long road trip and just about every other week, I always check to make sure all my lights are working, front headlights, rear brake lights, parking lights, turn signals, inside dome lights. Most light are easy to inspect and even easier to replace. Along with buying your Quaker State Oil, you can find various other car care needs at your local Wal-Mart! It has most everything for your DIY car care maintenance and at a great price.
